Alessi Il Conico Tea Set

R3,500.00

Post Modern Perfection!

A statement tea kettle by Alessi, named the `Il Conico` stove-top kettle, designed by Aldo Rossi, with the matching milk jug, sugarbowl and spoon, circa 1986.

This piece is marked `Officina`, Alessi`s luxury division with some of the most exclusive designs that were only produced in relatively small numbers.

The set is in flawless condition, and looks practically new.

Cones were repeatedly used in Rossi’s rigorous design process.

Aldo Rossi was an Italian architect, theorist, writer and designer, author of important projects in Europe and the United States and winner of the 1990 Pritzker Architecture Prize (equivalent to the Nobel Prize).

He is considered one of the leading exponents of the Post Modern movement. He trained in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, where he graduated in 1959. In 1963 he began teaching, first as assistant to Ludovico Quaroni (1963) at the Arezzo School of Urban Planning, then to Carlo Aymonino at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia.

He became interested in the urban planning of cities and even published a book on the subject. For the Venice Biennale of 1979 he designed a floating theatre, the Teatro del Mondo, with a capacity of 250 spectators seated around the stage. More recently, he also designed the building of the National Opera in Genoa. His first work in America was also a theatre, the Lighthouse Theatre on Lake Ontario in Toronto, Canada. In 1995 he built the current building of the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Architectural highlights include: the Teatro del Mondo floating theatre (Venice), the Friedrichstadt Housing Building (Berlin), the San Cataldo Cemetery (Modena), the National Opera House (Genoa), the Paganini Theatre and the development of the Piazza della Pilotta (Italy) and the Galician Museum of the Sea (together with César Portela; Vigo, Spain). His creations in the field of industrial design can be seen today in such prominent collections as the MoMA in New York.
